The Cederberg
The Cederberg, a sandstone mountain range in South Africa's Western Cape, is the home of rooibos and almost its only home. This is the canonical account of the region: its location and boundaries, the acid fynbos soil and winter-rain climate that suit the bush, the legume and fire adaptations that fit it to the place, and the geographical protection that has fixed the name to the ground.
Cederberg is a range of weathered sandstone mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa, a few hours' drive north of Cape Town, and it is the home of rooibos. The red bush, Aspalathus linearis, grows in the wild only along a narrow belt of the southwestern Cape, and nearly all of the world's rooibos, wild-gathered and farmed alike, comes from this range and the sandy valleys around its feet. Almost every other drink you can name, tea, coffee, the common herbal infusions, is grown across many countries and several continents. Rooibos is grown in one. This is the record of where that one place is, what it is made of, and why the bush has stayed within sight of these mountains.
Location and extent
Cederberg lies in the West Coast District of the Western Cape, running roughly north to south inland of the coastal town of Clanwilliam. It is a rugged sandstone landscape of bare peaks, deep valleys, and sandy plateaus, part of the Cape Fold mountain belt.
The wild range of rooibos is wider than this range alone but still small. The plant occurs naturally in the winter-rainfall area from about Vanrhynsdorp in the north down to the Cape Peninsula and the Betty's Bay area in the south, according to the South African National Biodiversity Institute. Commercial cultivation is more concentrated still. The South African Rooibos Council records that the bush thrives in the deep sands and loamy soils of the Sandveld, Cederberg range, the Gifberg, and the Suid Bokkeveld, with the mountainous country flanking the Olifants River valley and Cederberg forming the core of cultivation. Outside this corner of the Cape the bush does not establish itself as a crop.
The fynbos
Rooibos belongs to the fynbos, the fine-leaved shrubland of the Cape and one of the great floral regions of the world. The name (Afrikaans, "fine bush") describes a vegetation of low, hard-leaved, drought- and fire-adapted shrubs that covers much of the southwestern Cape on poor, acid, sandy ground. Rooibos is a member of the pea family (Fabaceae) and one species among thousands in this flora.
The plant is endemic to this region, meaning it grows wild here and in no other place. Its leaves are green and needle-like, 15 to 60 mm long and up to about 1 mm thick, a form that loses less water than a broad leaf and suits a place with a long dry season.
The soil
Cederberg soils are sandy, sharply draining, acid, and low in the nutrients most crops require. The fynbos generally grows on such ground, and rooibos is among the plants suited to it. SANBI records the soil as sandy and the habitat as one rooibos shares with the rest of the fynbos; the soils are acidic, with the species recorded as tolerant of acid to neutral conditions.
The fit between the bush and this poor ground rests on a single fact: rooibos is a legume, and legumes carry their own source of nitrogen. On the plant's roots, nodules house nitrogen-fixing soil bacteria, chiefly Mesorhizobium species: the strain isolated from a wild rooibos nodule here and sequenced was the most effective nitrogen-fixing symbiont the researchers tested. Because of it, the lean acid soil that would not support a field of wheat supplies what rooibos needs. Rich, fertilised farmland confers no advantage on the bush and favours its faster-growing competitors instead. On thin acid ground, rooibos faces little competition.
The climate
Cederberg has a Mediterranean climate: cold, wet winters and long, hot, dry summers. SANBI records about 300 to 350 mm of rain a year, falling almost entirely in the winter months, followed by a rainless summer. This is a semi-arid regime, and the plant's adaptations answer it. The needle leaves reduce water loss through the dry season. Cultivated rooibos is grown without irrigation, so the size of the crop tracks the winter rains closely.
Fire and seed
Like the rest of the fynbos, rooibos is a fire plant, fitted to a landscape that burns periodically. Wild rooibos occurs in two growth forms with opposite responses to fire. Reseeders are killed by a burn, but the fire stimulates the germination of their seed, so the next generation rises from the soil. Resprouters survive the fire and grow back from a woody base (a lignotuber).
The seed of wild rooibos is dispersed by ants, which carry the seeds off to their nests below the ground. That habit left a mark on the history of the crop: early growers gathered seed from the ants' nests to sow. The fuller account of that history is in how rooibos became a crop.
Wild and cultivated
Most rooibos today is a cultivated crop, sown and harvested on farms rather than foraged off the mountainside, though wild harvesting of natural stands continues alongside it. Both stay within the same small region. Attempts to grow the bush as a commercial crop outside its natural range have not succeeded; the difficulty lies in matching the soil chemistry, the acidity, the winter-rainfall pattern, and the conditions the seedlings need. Geographical protection
The name is now legally tied to this ground. Since 2021 the European Union has reserved "rooibos" for leaf grown in the designated municipalities of the Western and Northern Cape, the first African food to earn a protected designation of origin, and South Africa had fixed the same link at home years earlier. A note on health
