Almost Every Cup of Rooibos Comes From One Plant, Picked in the 1930s

Wild rooibos grows across roughly 600,000 hectares of the Cederberg and Bokkeveld as at least four genetically distinct types. Nearly every cultivated bush you have ever steeped descends from just one of them, selected in the 1930s, and the wild relatives that did not make the cut are still out there, mostly untasted.

Nearly every box, bag, and loose-leaf tin of rooibos on a shelf anywhere in the world traces back to one plant, or rather one small group of cuttings and seed, selected from a single wild population in the Cederberg in the 1930s. The bush growing wild in the mountains around it, the one Khoi and San communities knew long before any of this, is not one thing. Botanists now recognise at least four genetically and chemically distinct wild types, spread over roughly 600,000 hectares, and the cultivated crop draws on only one of them.

The bush you have never tasted

The plant cultivated and sold as rooibos, Aspalathus linearis, looks tidy because farmers made it that way. Every commercial field descends from what researchers call the Erect ecotype, also known by the name of the man who selected it, Pieter le Fras Nortier, a Clanwilliam doctor who in the 1930s gathered seed from the Pakhuis mountains and the Grootkloof valley, working with local Cederberg seed collectors and the harvester ants whose nests the Ministry has already told that story about. What got into Nortier's seed bags became, eventually, almost the entire industry.

It was never the only rooibos. A team led by Tineke Kraaij surveyed the wild Fynbos Biome and confirmed at least four distinct wild ecotypes, distinguished by growth form and by how each one survives a fire. The Bush and Prostrate types resprout from an underground lignotuber after a burn, wider than they are tall. The Erect and Salignus types are reseeders, killed outright by fire and depending entirely on a fresh crop of seedlings to return, taller and more upright in habit, the form Nortier's selection belongs to. Each predicted range runs to 120,000 to 250,000 hectares, with little overlap between them, and the four together are estimated at upward of 15 million wild plants. They are not simply the same bush in different places. Genetic analysis using microsatellite and chloroplast markers finds a clear, consistent split between the resprouters and the reseeders, the kind of split that does not happen by chance.

What the wild types actually taste like, and why no one would know

The differences are not only botanical. A 2024 metabolomic survey of fifteen wild populations across the Cederberg and the Suid Bokkeveld, near Nieuwoudtville, found fifty-five compounds whose levels varied meaningfully from one population to the next, with measurable swings in antioxidant strength. The Welbedacht population tested highest for free-radical scavenging activity in the study's assay, well above the lowest-scoring site tested, and several populations carried distinct, in places still unidentified, chemical signatures. None of that is on a supermarket shelf. The cultivated Erect-type crop is bred and processed for a consistent taste and colour at scale, which is exactly what a single, narrow genetic base delivers. The wild diversity sits outside that pipeline almost entirely, tasted by very few people anywhere.

Two communities still harvest it on purpose. The Heiveld Cooperative, near Nieuwoudtville, and the Wupperthal Original Rooibos Tea Cooperative, in the Cederberg, both sell wild-harvested rooibos in small volume, fair-trade lots picked from the same wild stands the genetic surveys sampled. Set against the roughly 15,000 tonnes the industry produces each year, the wild harvest these two cooperatives draw from is a very small share of the national total. Whatever the wild types taste like, almost no cup anyone drinks is one of them.

The catch: the type the crop came from is the one most exposed

The honest complication sits in the conservation numbers themselves. Across the four wild ecotypes, just over a quarter of the predicted range falls inside a protected area, and protection is not spread evenly. The Prostrate type is the best covered, at 38 percent. The Erect type, the very ecotype the entire cultivated industry was selected from, is the least protected of the four, at 20 percent. Researchers rank a warming climate as the largest threat to all four types going forward, ahead of land conversion, overharvesting, or invasive species, none of which showed up as serious risks at most surveyed sites. So the one wild population genetically closest to every field anyone farms, the most likely source of new genes if the cultivated crop ever needs to be bred for heat or drought it cannot currently handle, is also the one with the thinnest formal protection.

That is not a reason to worry over a cup of tea before bed. It is a reason to know what is actually growing in the mountains behind it. The plant you drink each evening is real, well understood, and in no danger of running out. It is also, by the numbers, a small and somewhat exposed slice of a much larger, far less known plant, parts of which have never properly been tasted by the people who study them, let alone by you.
