The Calm Cup Claim, and How Far the Evidence Reaches
Rooibos removes caffeine from the evening question entirely, and a small run of animal studies on green rooibos extract has begun asking whether it does more. Here is what genuinely holds up, and what is still a finding in worms and fish, not yet in you.
There is no trade-off to weigh here, and that is worth stating plainly before anything else. Rooibos is caffeine-free by biology, not by processing, so an evening cup carries none of the small, real dose a decaffeinated tea still does. Caffeine-free and proud, as this office has said before, and that alone earns rooibos its place in the last cup you pour before bed. What is new, and worth being precise about, is a small, growing body of animal research asking whether a concentrated green rooibos extract calms anxiety-like behaviour directly, not just by removing caffeine from the equation. It has been shown in roundworms and fish. It has not been shown in you, and this piece will not pretend otherwise.
There is no clock to watch, so brew it how you like
Ordinary tea gives the evening drinker a real dilemma: a weaker, shorter steep to cut the caffeine, or a stronger cup and a worse night's sleep. Rooibos was never built with that trade-off in it. The plant makes no caffeine at any concentration, so a cup steeped for three minutes and a pot left for twenty carry the identical, true zero. There is no clock-watching reason to hold back at night that does not equally apply at nine in the morning.
The other reason tea gets brewed cautiously, tannins turning a forgotten cup bitter, also does not apply to rooibos. The red bush is low in the compounds that cause it, so a long, dark, near-boiled steep does not punish the cup; it deepens it, drawing out more of the natural maltol and vanillin that round the flavour toward honey and wood. An evening cup has no reason to be the timid version of a daytime one. If anything, the last cup of the day is where rooibos's forgiving chemistry is most worth using: steep it strong, let it sit while you finish something else, and drink it exactly as dark as you want.
What a small run of animal studies has actually asked
Two papers, five years apart, have looked past caffeine and asked whether rooibos does something to anxiety itself, and both used the same starting material: a concentrated, standardized extract of green rooibos, the unfermented leaf, not the everyday red cup most evening drinkers reach for.
The first, published in Food & Function in 2022 by a team including researchers at Stellenbosch University, tested a green rooibos polyphenol extract on zebrafish larvae in a light-dark tank, a standard setup in which a more anxious fish avoids the lit side. Fish given the extract at lower doses spent measurably more time in the light, read as reduced anxiety-like behaviour, alongside a scavenging effect on free radicals the paper rated roughly comparable to vitamins C and E. The second, published on 8 May 2026 in the journal BioFactors by a Spanish team at the University of Leon working with food scientists in Valencia, ran a fresh test on the same extract using a Novel Tank Test: after four months of eating it, adult zebrafish spent more time in the tank's upper third rather than hugging the bottom, the standard sign researchers read as calmer behaviour, and roundworms fed the extract survived induced oxidative stress better, with normal swimming activity in both species throughout.
Read together, that is a real, small, and specifically green-rooibos body of preclinical evidence, not a single fluke result. It is also, deliberately, not a claim about the fermented red rooibos that fills most kettles. Fermentation, the step that turns the leaf red, converts most of its aspalathin and related polyphenols into other compounds, so a cup of ordinary red rooibos is chemically a different, more processed thing than the concentrated green extract both studies actually tested.
The mechanism the researchers proposed, and its own limits
The 2022 team did not stop at the behaviour; they asked what might cause it. Their green rooibos extract acted as a moderate inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), an enzyme that clears mood-regulating brain chemicals and is also the target of an older class of prescription antidepressants, though the extract's effect was clearly weaker than clorgyline, the reference drug used for comparison. In a second test, the same extract appeared to restore normal signalling at the GABA receptor, the brain's principal braking system for anxiety and the same target several prescription sedatives work through, in zebrafish larvae whose signalling had been chemically disrupted with pentylenetetrazole, a seizure-inducing compound.
Both findings describe an enzyme and a receptor behaving a certain way in a dish and a larval fish. Neither has been shown to happen in a human brain after a cup of tea, extract or otherwise, and the researchers frame their own results exactly that way, as a plausible biochemical account for an animal finding, not as established pharmacology. Early is the honest word for where this sits: promising enough that a serious group has now tested it twice, on two different animals, five years apart, and not yet strong enough to be anything but that.
The company rooibos keeps at night
None of this is why people already reach for rooibos in the evening; they do that for the plainer reason above. But rooibos does not have the caffeine-free evening lane to itself, and it is worth being honest about its neighbours rather than pretending the pairing is folklore. Chamomile, an entirely different plant with its own separate research record, is the standing default bedtime herb, and commercial blends that pair the two, rooibos as the base, chamomile folded in for its own familiar reputation, are a real, widely sold category rather than an invented tradition. Honeybush, rooibos's fynbos cousin from further along South Africa's coast, sits in the same lane on its own terms: also caffeine-free, also traditionally brewed strong, and a common partner in the same evening blends for its naturally sweeter cup.
None of that borrows credibility from the animal research above. Chamomile earns its place on a different, older shelf of evidence entirely, and honeybush earns its on being a genuinely different, equally gentle plant. Rooibos's own case for the evening does not need either of them. It was built on the one fact that has never needed a caveat: nothing in the cup was ever going to keep you up.
