More of the Cederberg Is Under a Conservation Pact Than Under Rooibos
Rooibos farms in the Cederberg have signed more land into formal conservation agreements than the entire industry cultivates, a corridor that also keeps a camera-trapped leopard population, a dying cedar, and the plant's own wild backup moving.
Twenty-two landowners in the central Cederberg have signed roughly 170,000 hectares (about 420,000 acres) of their own ground into formal conservation agreements under the Cederberg Conservancy, the Conservancy's own account of its stewardship agreements records. The entire South African rooibos industry, every field of it, farms somewhere around 65,000 hectares (about 160,000 acres) of the Cederberg and Sandveld combined, a trade-press account of the crop puts the industry-wide cultivated area. Put plainly: the same valley that grows the world's rooibos has committed nearly three times more of its land to staying wild than it has to the crop itself.
That is not an accident of geography. It is a standing partnership between farmers and conservation bodies, built specifically because a rooibos field sits inside one of the richest, most fragile plant landscapes on earth, and the industry has spent two decades deciding that leaving most of it alone is worth the paperwork.
What a farm actually signs up for
The Cederberg Conservancy, formed in 1997, is one of the founding member areas of the Greater Cederberg Biodiversity Corridor, a CapeNature-led partnership stretching roughly from Nieuwoudtville in the north to the Groot Winterhoek range in the south, CapeNature's own corridor page describes it. Farmers in the Conservancy do not simply promise good behavior. They sign one of a small set of legal stewardship instruments, a Contract Nature Reserve, a Biodiversity Agreement, or a Conservation Area agreement, each registered against the title of the land itself, so the commitment survives a sale of the farm. It is closer to a permanent land-use decision than a certificate on a wall.
The reason a rooibos grower has land worth putting under this kind of agreement in the first place is the terrain itself. Aspalathus linearis is planted only in narrow, sandy, acidic pockets within a much larger expanse of mountain and lowland fynbos (the fine-leaved shrubland that covers the Cape's winter-rainfall region), so most working rooibos farms are mostly not rooibos: a field or two, and a great deal of veld around them that was never worth clearing. The Conservancy's stewardship agreements formalize what many farms were already doing by default, and add a second thing they were not: active management, fire planning, and rehabilitation of the parts that had been degraded.
A hotspot with more at stake than one crop
The land these agreements protect is not ordinary scrub. The Cederberg sits inside the Cape Floristic Region, one of the world's six recognized floral kingdoms and, per hectare, its richest, packed with plant species found nowhere else. Rooibos itself is a single, narrow example of that richness: its own wild relatives, several genetically distinct ecotypes scattered across the surrounding veld, are a story this office has told before, and every one of them lives on land like the Conservancy's, not on a cultivated field.
Conservation here is therefore not a courtesy the tea industry extends to nature. It is the industry protecting the same ground its own future breeding stock, and a great deal else, actually depends on.
The cat that needs the fields left connected
One of the Conservancy's longest-running projects is not about plants at all. The Cape Leopard Trust, a research and conservation body founded in 2004, began its work in the Cederberg that same year, the Conservancy's own project page records, and the two organizations have worked together continuously since.
A leopard in these mountains cannot survive inside a single reserve. Its home range runs to hundreds of square kilometers, which means it depends on farmland exactly as much as it depends on a proclaimed wilderness area, and a landscape carved into disconnected patches simply stops working for an animal that size. The Trust's research relies on cooperating private and farm landowners for camera-trap access and protection commitments across the whole corridor, not just the parts already fenced off as reserve. A rooibos farm that has signed a stewardship agreement is not decorating its fence line. It is keeping a corridor a leopard can actually walk.
The tree the same corridor is trying to save
The Conservancy's work extends to a single, specific, endangered species that has nothing to do with tea. The Clanwilliam cedar (Widdringtonia cedarbergensis), a slow-growing conifer found only in these mountains, is listed as critically endangered, and the scale of its decline is now measured with unusual precision. A 2016 study in BMC Ecology compared 87 pairs of historical and present-day photographs taken across the range between 1931 and 2013: of 1,313 live cedars counted in the old images, 74 percent had died by the time of the modern photograph, and only 44 new trees, 3.4 percent of the original count, had grown to take their place, the peer-reviewed study reports. Repeated, more frequent fire, the paper concludes, is the main driver, a change in the landscape's fire regime the tree evolved too slowly to handle.
A rehabilitation effort under the same corridor umbrella, run with the community group Sustainable Ceder alongside CapeNature and local landowners, propagates cedar seedlings in nurseries and replants them across the mountain range, part of a wider set of farmer rehabilitation programmes that have restored roughly 500 hectares (about 1,200 acres) of Cederberg land in total, the South African Rooibos Council's own account of the industry's conservation work describes. None of that land grows a single rooibos bush. It is simply the same landowners, the same corridor, and the same standing partnership, turned toward a tree that happens to share their mountain.
Why the field itself has a stake in this
None of this would matter much to a rooibos drinker if the crop's own future were secure regardless. It is not, quite. A 2014 study in Ecology and Evolution modeled where rooibos, wild and cultivated, can physically grow under a warmer climate, and projected substantial contraction and an uphill, southeastward shift in suitable habitat by 2041 to 2070, the peer-reviewed modeling paper found, driven above all by declining winter rainfall, the one resource this rain-fed crop has never had a backup for (a dependence these files have recorded in full). The area the study flagged as most exposed was the Suid-Bokkeveld, home to smallholders who still harvest rooibos from the wild rather than from planted rows.
An Afrikaans-language industry report corroborates the shape of the worry from the growers' own side: citing regional climate models, it puts the likely warming at roughly 2.7 to 3.2 degrees Celsius (about 5 to 6 degrees Fahrenheit) across the growing area, alongside a more uncertain swing in winter rainfall, and names a more frequent El Niño cycle, the same pattern behind the severe 2015 to 2016 drought, as the nearer-term risk, ProAgri's 2024 report for South African growers states.
If the cultivated crop's range genuinely narrows, the wild ecotypes scattered through the Conservancy's protected veld, the very ones this office has cataloged elsewhere, are the reservoir a plant breeder would turn to first. Land a farm chooses to leave standing is not idle. It is the industry's own contingency, whether or not that was the original point of signing the paperwork.
The industry once tried to turn this same biodiversity work into a market-facing certification of its own, a scheme called Right Rooibos, and that particular effort did not survive past 2014, a story these files have told in full. The Conservancy's stewardship agreements are a different, older, and quieter thing: a land-title commitment between neighbors and a conservation agency, with no logo for a shopper to look for, that has simply kept running while the marketing version came and went.
